HOLIDAY SPA OWNERS ADMIT HIRING BIAS
The owner of Holiday Spa health clubs in five cities is creating a $1.4 million program to compensate blacks rejected for jobs because of their color, the company and the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission announced Thursday. The agreement between the EEOC and U.S. Health Inc. of Towson, Md., followed a year of investigation and another of negotiations, said Frank Fritts, supervisor in the EEOC's systemic investigations division.
It was not known exactly how many people may have been subjected to employment discrimination between Nov. 1, 1987, and July 27, 1990, at the Holiday Spa clubs in Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Philadelphia and Washington, Fritts said.
U.S. Health will start running advertisements this month to seek out people who believe they were discriminated against when they applied for sales or service positions, he said. Their cases will be reviewed by the EEOC and the company, and the two will decide together who will be eligible for compensation, he said.
