RADFORD TOPPLES STETSON

Don Burgess scored a career-high 19 points and Pete Reece had a good game in relief of injured Tom Gallaher to lead Radford University past Stetson 66-57 in a non-conference basketball game Thursday night.

Radford took the lead for good with 3:43 left when Chris Hawkins made a layup and was fouled. He made a free throw to make it 57-55, and the Highlanders (5-5) allowed only one more field goal.

Radford sank 10 of its last 11 free throws to seal the win, which snapped a two-game losing streak, including a tough loss to Central Florida on New Year's Eve.

"We were very tired but we showed our mental toughness," coach Ron Bradley said. "Our guys really did what they had to do to pull out a win."

Reece, starting for Gallaher, scored 11 points and had a career-high 12 rebounds.

Stetson suffered its fifth straight loss. \
