KNIGHTS PULL AWAY FOR WIN

James River pulled away with an 18-9 run in the final five minutes and defeated Natural Bridge 62-49 in a Pioneer District boys' basketball game Thursday night.

The Knights (4-2 overall, 4-0 Pioneer) led 44-40 when coach John Shotwell decided to spread the offense. James River had no turnovers and scored on almost each possession with either a field goal or free throw. Forward Jody Steger had the best game of his career, scoring a team-high 19 points.

The Eagles, down 15 at the half, scored the first 10 points of the third quarter and used an 18-2 run to rally past the visiting Gaels in a Virginia Independent Conference game. Junior guard Sam Donnelly scored 10 points in the third-quarter run, finished with 18 and also got 10 rebounds. Roanoke Valley Christian (3-6, 2-3) was Jason Delong, who also scored 18 points.

Elisha Jones scored 15 points and made some key steals that led to fast-break points in the fourth quarter as the Patriots got by the home-standing Colonels. Caroline Mays added 10 points for Patrick Henry (5-2). Marqueetta Randolph had a game-high 20 points for William Fleming (5-2).
