FLOYD'S TURNER HONORED
The International Motorsports Hall of Fame has selected 10 new inductees for 1992, including Curtis Turner of Floyd, Va.Other honorees are Alberto Ascari, Louis Chevrolet, Andy Granatelli, Peter Gregg, Louis Meyer, Wally Parks, Eddie Rickenbacker, Kenny Roberts and Rodger Ward.
The inductees represent a cross-section of motorsports activity. Granatelli, Meyer and Ward gained fame in Indianapolis-car racing; Chevrolet and Rickenbacker are from the early years of the sport; Gregg was a sports car driving ace; Parks was the organizer of sanctioned drag racing; Roberts gained international fame as a motorcycle racer; Turner was a stock car racing legend; and Ascari was a world Grand Prix champion.
Turner was born in 1924 in Floyd. He began racing in 1946 in Mt. Airy, N.C., finishing last in a field of 18 cars. Turner, who won 360 races, he died Oct. 5, 1970. - Staff report
