FIRST NIGHT HAILED AS HIT

Organizers say the First Night Roanoke party on Tuesday far exceeded initial expectations. More than 4,000 admission buttons were purchased.

Wendi Shultz, executive director of Festival in the Park, which sponsored the New Year's Eve event, said more than 2,500 of those were "adult" admissions sold for those older than 12.

Shultz said cash expenses will be very close to the $33,000 budgeted, with in-kind donations - including the time of more than 225 volunteers - at least equalling that amount.

Festival board members will hold a critique meeting later this month to consider the operation of the festival and proposals for changes this year, Shultz said.

Anticipating growth, "I certainly think we will have to have some satellite locations" for some events next New Year's Eve, Shultz said. She said the group also probably will address one bottleneck that occurred inside the Virginia Museum of Transportation.

Basically, though, the same types of activities are likely to be scheduled, but expanded for a bigger crowd.
