Senior forward Gwen Thomas had 20 points and 16 rebounds and Georgia Southern held off a late rally to defeat Radford 86-82 Friday night in the first round of the Lady Eagle Invitational basketball tournament.Kent defeated Marshall 86-72 in the other first-round game. The Highlanders (5-6) will play Marshall in the consolation game today at 5:15.
Only five Radford players scored, and all reached double figures. Patrinda Toney led the way with 25, followed by Becky Harden with 18, Tammie Crown 15, Rosalyn Groce 13 and Shannon Wilkey 11. Crown had 13 rebounds, and Toney had seven assists.
The Highlanders used a 24-13 run late in the second half to pull to 80-78, but they never got closer.
