VALVANO TO STICK WITH TELEVISION
Jim Valvano will remain on television after an experience with the NBA that reminded him of a TV soap opera. The current ESPN and ABC analyst and former basketball coach at North Carolina State commented for the first time Saturday concerning reports linking him with the New Jersey Nets coaching job.
Those reports had him taking over for Bill Fitch before an apparent disagreement among the team's owners created a three-day media circus.
"I feel at times it was a dream sequence from `Dallas' and I feel I've just awakened," Valvano said before Saturday's Oklahoma-Massachusetts game at the Springfield Civic Center.
"Right now I'm very happy. The dream sequence has ended," he said. "I'm doing the UMass game. I'm looking forward to my year behind the mike in college basketball."
Valvano, 45, resigned as coach at N.C. State in 1990 and joined ESPN that year as a studio analyst. He has started working games as an analyst for both ESPN and ABC.
