ROANOKE FALLS TO CAPTAINS IN OVERTIME

Christopher Newport dominated the extra period and took a 75-67 overtime victory over Roanoke College in the opening round of the Catholic New Year Invitational basketball tournament Saturday at Catholic University.

The Maroons will play the loser of the Catholic-New York Maritime in the consolation game today at 4 p.m.

After starting slowly and trailing by 15 in the second half, the Maroons (4-4) rallied late, first tying the score at 63 with just over a minute remaining.

Christopher Newport turned over the ball, and Roanoke worked the clock until Mike Murphy was fouled with 28 seconds to play. Murphy made two free throws to put the Maroons up 65-63.

With five seconds left, Corey Stoakley made his only basket, sending the game to overtime.

The Maroons scored the first basket of overtime, but the Captains got the last 10 points and the victory.

"It's our worst performance of the season," said Roanoke coach Page Moir. "We just didn't play well from the break. With 14 days off, we just didn't have our timing down offensively. Nothing was going right for us early."

James Boykins did most of the damage for Christopher Newport by scoring 24 points to go with 15 rebounds. Steve Artis had 20 points and nine assists for the Captains.
