CRAIG COUNTY SURVIVES HIGHLAND COMEBACK
Craig County overcame turnover problems in the second half and held on for a 65-64 Pioneer District boys' basketball victory over Highland on Saturday night. The Rockets (1-5 overall, 1-4 district) led 28-8 after one quarter, but the Rams (0-6, 0-5) started applying pressure on defense and slowly crept back into the game.
It was 43-27 at the half and 51-38 after three quarters, but the Rams turned on the defensive pressure in the fourth. They forced 15 second-half turnovers and tied the score at 64 on Shawn Harvey's drive to the basket with 40 seconds left.
Highland, however, never took the lead. Craig held the ball until David McPherson was fouled and sank a free throw with five seconds left for the winning margin. McPherson blocked a Shawn Harvey shot at the buzzer.
McPherson finished with a game-high 34 points for Craig; Harvey pumped in 28 for Highland. - Staff report
