PATRICK HENRY WINS HERITAGE RELAYS

James Williams was on each of Patrick Henry's four first-place teams and the Patriots took first place overall in the boys' competition at the Heritage Relays indoor track and field meet on Saturday.

Patrick Henry scored 77 points to outdistance Clover Hill (53), Jefferson Forest (50), Fauquier (46) and Appomattox (42). William Fleming was eighth with 23 points.

There were 15 teams at the meet.

The Patriots won the high-jump relay with a total of 18 feet, the long-jump relay (58 feet) the triple-jump relay (119 feet, 6 inches) and the 60-yard shuttle relay (33.4 seconds).

William Fleming's team of Paul Paige, Paul Witt, Leroy Witt and Eric Lewis won the 880 relay in a time of 1:40.18.

In the girls' competition, William Fleming finished third with 38 points and Patrick Henry fourth with 36. Fauquier was first with 50.

The Colonels' team of Monica Cabbler, Michele Watson, Keyshia Anderson and Najah Link won the 880 relay (1:57.0) and the four-lap relay (1:14.0).

Christi Hannah, Betty Steelman and Regina Johnson won the shot-put relay for Patrick Henry with a combined toss of 85-10.

In other indoor track Saturday:

Ronde and Tiki Barber, stars on the football field, also do pretty well for themselves on the track. The Cave Spring High twins picked up a first place, a second, two thirds and a fourth in the Virginia Tech High School Invitational at Rector Fieldhouse in Blacksburg.

Ronde blazed to a first in the 55-meter hurdles in 7.47 seconds. Tiki finished second in the triple jump at 46 feet, 6 3/4 inches, and third in the long jump (22-2 3/4) and 55-meter dash (6.5 seconds).

Ronde and Tiki combined with Chris Vaughan and Travis Manning for a fourth-place finish in the 4 x 200-meter relay. The time was 1:35.27.

Emily Rakes was the highest finishing Cave Spring girl, taking a fourth in the high jump at 5 feet, 2 inches. - Staff report
