AIRLINE DEREGULATION WAS IN CARTER'S TERM
IN HER COMMENTARY about careless drivers on Interstate 81 ("Holiday travel can be made safer," Dec. 24), Kate Coughlin says she took the time to carefully examine the reasons for all the speeding, lane changing and tailgating, and she came up with some interesting information. Lo and behold, all this carrying-on on I-81 is linked with President Reagan's deregulation of the airlines in the early 1980s.I fail to understand how deregulation of the airlines causes careless driving on I-81. But I do know the airline-deregulation bill was passed in the late 1970s under Jimmy Carter, not under President Reagan.
I believe some of the careless driving on I-81 is caused by people like Coughlin, while she is enjoying the scenery and not looking at the road and traffic. These people should take the Blue Ridge Parkway. RICHARD COOKE MONETA
