WALTRIP FASTEST IN GM TESTING
Michael Waltrip, with a speed of 189.514 mph in his Pontiac on Monday, led the General Motors cars in the first day of January testing for the Feb. 16 Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway.Hut Stricklin followed Waltrip with a lap of 188.482 mph in his Chevrolet on the first day of a four-day GM test session on the 2.5-mile oval. Terry Labonte was clocked at 187.852 mph in his Chevy, followed by Derrike Cope in another Chevy at 186.761 mph and Kenny Wallace in a Pontiac at 186.374 mph.
Waltrip said his team was working on gear and engine combinations Monday and hoped to get into the 190 mph range today "with scuffed tires and a new engine."
Monday's speeds were consistent with the December practice speeds of the General Motors cars, which averaged a mile per hour or two slower than the Fords in December. A four-day Ford test session at Daytona begins Jan. 14. - Staff report
