EVANS PAINT EMPLOYEES PUT ON HOLD

The 38 employees at Evans Paint Inc. were told not to return from their two-week Christmas holiday and the future of the Roanoke paint manufacturer is in limbo, an official said Tuesday.

Dave Finn, the company's chief financial officer, said officials at the Miami headquarters of APL Inc., which owns Evans, are evaluating whether to resume operation at the Cleveland Avenue plant in Southwest Roanoke.

APL is one of several companies being sued by Roanoke County for $2 million in cleanup costs for the old Dixie Caverns landfill off Virginia 778 north of the caverns.

The suit, which involves the dumping of potentially hazardous materials from the mid-1950s to the mid-1970s, also names General Electric Corp.; VFP Inc., formerly Virginia Fiberglass Products in Roanoke; John A. Hall & Co.; and Howard Brothers Inc.

The suit was filed in late 1990. The 29-acre landfill site is being cleaned up by orders from the Environmental Protection Agency.

Charles Williams III, a lawyer who is handling the matter for Roanoke County, said hearings in the case are expected to begin next month in U.S. District Court.

APL is part of Grossman's, which has been in bankruptcy reorganization since the mid-1980s, he said. APL officials could not be reached Tuesday for comment.
