FLOYD SUPERVISORS ELECT DICKERSON BOARD CHAIRMAN
The only member of the Floyd County Board of Supervisors without a political-party affiliation is now board chairman.Howard Dickerson, 43, an independent who represents District D (Burks Fork), was unanimously elected chairman at the supervisors' organizational meeting.
He replaces William Whitlock, who'd been chairman the past 4 1/2 years and also had held the position 1968-1978 and in 1984. Whitlock, a Republican, continues to represent District B (Little River).
David Ingram, District A (Locust Grove) a Republican, was unanimously re-elected vice chairman for a third year.
The meeting was the first for the newest supervisors, Democrats Jerry Boothe of District C (Courthouse) and Edsel Duncan of District E (Indian Valley).
The board also set its regular meeting time as 8:30 a.m. on third Mondays. The supervisors had met at 9:30 from October to March and 8:30 from April to September. However, because of national holidays, the board will meet on third Tuesdays the next two months - Jan. 21 and Feb. 18.
The supervisors also held their annual discussion with their legislators, Sen. Virgil Goode and Del. Willard Finney, both Rocky Mount Democrats. Among topics discussed were state landfill regulations and the proposed 20 percent local funding match for state road projects.
