JEFFERSON FOREST RALLIES 52-48

Jefferson Forest, down by eight points at the half, needed less than eight minutes to take the lead and held on for a 52-48 victory over Buckingham County in Seminole District boys' basketball Tuesday night.

Ryan Gilleland scored 12 of his team-high 15 points in the second half, 10 in the third quarter, when the Cavaliers outscored Buckingham 19-8 in taking 36-33 lead.

Jefferson Forest (5-3 overall, 5-3 Seminole) extended its lead to 47-35 with 3:56 remaining, but Buckingham (5-2, 5-2) scored the next 11 points, closing to 47-46 on a two-handed dunk and free throw by Ron Swann with 32 seconds left.

Gilleland made two free throws for Jefferson Forest with 29 seconds left and Buckingham was unable to hit the rim on two 3-point shots in the closing seconds. \

BLAND - The Buffaloes opened the game with a 22-5 run and went on to squash the Rockets in a Mountain Empire District game.

Twelve players scored for Floyd (6-1, 4-1), which was led by Mike Hylton's 18 points.

NARROWS - The upstart Green Wave threw a serious scare into the state's third-ranked Group A team before finally succumbing in a Mountain Empire District shootout that featured 16 3-pointers.

Narrows (1-3, 1-3) bolted to a 26-13 first-quarter lead and led 45-38 at halftime before Fort Chiswell (7-0, 5-0) began its comeback behind Brian Lampkins and Doug Mabry.

Lampkins, who finished with a game-high 23 points, took control of the game, and Mabry, slowed in the first half by foul problems, scored 10 of his 13 points in the second half. \

Giles 61

Shawsville 54

PEARISBURG - Brent Rampey's 17 points paced Giles (1-4, 1-4) to the victory in a meeting of Mountain Empire District have-nots.

Giles broke to a 13-2 first-quarter lead by pressuring the Shawnees into turnovers. Shawsville (0-5, 0-5) never got closer than the final margin.

Kenny Dow paced the losers with 24 points. \

Staunton River 61

MONETA - Center Charles Johnson dominated inside play with 26 points as the Governors (6-2, 6-2) got past the Golden Eagles in a Seminole District game.

Mike Moon and Troy Smith scored 19 points each to lead Staunton River (5-4, 5-4). \

Grayson County 68

Auburn 61

RINER - Bonner Satterwhite scored 24 points as the larger Blue Devils dominated the rebounding and overpowered the Eagles in a Mountain Empire District game.

Devin Floyd added 18 points for Grayson County (5-3, 4-1), which played a game of pitty-pat on the boards, outrebounding Auburn 47-33, including 20-10 on offense.

Terry Millirons and Brian Sale led Auburn (5-2, 4-1) with 14 points apiece.

Franklin County 43

DANVILLE - Dionne Smith scored 17 points and GW-Danville took command early onits way to a non-district won over Franklin County.

Danville (6-3) led 14-5 after the first quarter and 37-21 at halftime.

Shannon Conley led Franklin County (2-7) with nine points.

Henderson sank a short jumper with 21 seconds left to play to lift visiting Gateway Christian over Calvary Christian.

Henderson led Gateway (5-3) with 24 points, while Kevin Lucas added 21 and Matt Linkous 11. \
