VA. POWER TO PAY $140 MILLION FOR CLEANUP
Virginia Power will spend $140 million to clean up a West Virginia coal- fired generating plant and reduce pollution in the Shenandoah National Park, the utility announced Tuesday. The plan is part of an effort to comply with the federal Clean Air Act; it will have only a small effect on rates, a utility spokesman said. The company is installing a "scrubber," or filtration system, at its plant in Mount Storm, W.Va., about 60 miles west of Winchester. The plant provides electricity for about 400,000 homes in Virginia.
Pollution from Mount Storm drifts down through Virginia's Shenandoah Valley.\ The plant dumps about 150,000 tons of sulfur dioxide and about 40,000 tons\ of nitrogen oxide into the air every year.
