COACHES RETAIN 9TH ASSISTANT
College presidents will not leave the NCAA Convention undefeated. After hearing from coaching heavyweights Joe Paterno, Tom Osborne and now-retired Vince Dooley, delegates Wednesday permitted Division I-A coaches to retain their ninth assistants.
By a narrow margin in a paddle vote, the voters in Anaheim, Calif., agreed I-A schools could have nine assistant coaches and two graduate assistants, rather than eight assistants and four restricted-earnings coaches.
The chairman of the Presidents Commission, Gerald Turner of Mississippi, had called for the elimination of a full-time coach "as a matter of principle." It was adopted during the 1991 "cost-containment" convention.
James McComas, president at Virginia Tech and a commission member, supported the proposal. "My main concern was other sports will want their coaches back," he said.
