VMI OFFENSIVE COACH GOES TO NORTHWESTERN

VMI offensive coordinator Craig Johnson has left the school to become quarterbacks coach at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.

Johnson, who came to VMI when Keydets coach Jim Shuck took over the program in 1989, joins the staff of new Wildcats coach Gary Barnett.

"Craig is one the bright young quarterback coaches in the country," Barnett said. "He brings to Northwestern a solid background in both the option and passing games, which is exactly what we were looking for."

Under Johnson, VMI's wishbone set school rushing records in 1990 and 1991. This season, Keydets quarterback Tony Scales rushed for 1,105 yards and passed for 613.

Before VMI, Johnson, 31, coached running backs at Rutgers from 1986-88. He was a part-time assistant at Army in 1985. A native of Aurora, Colo., Johnson was a three-year letterman and starting quarterback at the University of Wyoming and graduated in 1983 with a degree in business administration.
