THE TIPOFF

DRESSING DOWN: Victoria Bond and the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra will present a concert Monday night at 8 at the Roanoke Civic Center auditorium, and the audience is invited to Come-As-It-Is, which is to say, you may dress casually.

Of course, you may dress casually for any symphony concert and probably would be more comfortable if you did. But the notion persists of having to dress up, and this is a formal invitation to disregard it.

There will be music: "Til Eulenspiegel" by Richard Strauss, "Concerto for Double Brass Choir" by John Harbison and Robert Schumann's Symphony No. 3.

Ticket prices are $10 to $14. Call 343-9127.\

ROAD SHOW: "Annie," the smash Broadway musical from several seasons ago, visits Burruss Hall at Virginia Tech on Thursday night at 7:30. Tickets are $16 for the general public and are available from the Squires ticket office.

Note: The office reopens Monday morning at 10. Call 231-5615 or, from outside the New River Valley, (800) 843-0332.\

THEY'RE B-A-A-A-C-K: Nothing brings a gleam to a child's eye like the monster trucks that appear periodically to the Salem Civic Center to take part in yet another Mud Bog. Swamp thunder returns in performances tonight and Saturday night at 8, so grab your earplugs and get in line for a down-home, mud-splattering, roaring good time.

Tickets are $12.50 in advance and $14.50 at the door and $7.50 for children age 2 (!) to 12.\

AIR ROANOKE: The Crestar Roundball Classic will pit the Colonels of William Fleming High School against Grimsley High School of Greensboro, N.C., and Patrick Henry's Patriots against Louisville Male of Louisville, Ky., on Saturday night at the Roanoke Civic Center coliseum.

The action starts at 7 o'clock. Tickets are $5 for adults and $2 for students. Call 981-2350.

Tonight, Fleming will play PH at the civic center. The varsity contest begins at 7:30.\

BE VOCAL: Tenor Gary Fulsebakke will present a vocal recital Saturday night at 8 in Radford University's Preston Auditorium.

He will perform works by Faure, Alban Berg, Gershwin, Norman Dello Joio and John Jacob Niles, among others.

Fulsebakke is an adjunct professor of music at Roanoke College and Radford and Liberty universities. He has sung with the Kansas City Lyric Opera and Opera Roanoke.

Admission is free. Call 831-5177 for information.

Mezzo soprano Clarity James, a Radford University voice professor, will present a solo recital Monday night at 8 in Preston Auditorium.

John Alden Carpenter, Mahler, Donizetti and Poulenc are among the composers to be represented.

James has a master's degree from Indiana University. She has sung with the New York City Opera, Philadelphia Orchestra and the Boston Symphony. Admission to her recital is $3 for the general public, $1 for children. Call 831-5177. \ TRADITIONAL FARE: Mike Seeger, noted acoustic musician in the old-time and traditional vein, will perform Saturday night at the Prism Coffeehouse in Charlottesville. Call (804) 97-PRISM for details.
