JMU EXTENDS CONTRACT FOR FOOTBALL COACH

The contract of James Madison football coach Rip Scherer has been extended through the 1996 season, school officials said Thursday.

Scherer led the Dukes to a 9-4 record and to the NCAA Division I-AA quarterfinals in 1991. Scherer originally signed a five-year contract when he joined the school in December, 1990. That contract would have expired in 1995.

Before coming to JMU, Scherer served as offensive coordinator at Arizona for two seasons. - Associated Press
