FORMER YANKEE TO SPEAK AT BANQUET

Former New York Yankees second baseman Bobby Richardson will be the guest speaker at the first Hot Stove Banquet for the Roanoke-Salem Baseball Hall of Fame.

The banquet, scheduled Sunday, Feb. 2, at the Salem Civic Center, will include the induction of the first five members - Walter "Steve" Brodie, F.J. "Kid" Carr, Al Holland, Dave Parker and Billy Sample.

Richardson, 56, played 12 seasons with the Bronx Bombers and appeared in seven World Series.

He was the Most Valuable Player in the 1960 Series, although the Yankees lost in seven games to Pittsburgh on Bill Mazeroski's seventh-game home run. Richardson's dramatic seventh-game, ninth-inning catch of Willie McCovey's line drive sealed New York's 1-0 victory in 1962. In 1964, Richardson set a World Series record with 13 hits. His appearance in 30 consecutive Series games also is a record.

Richardson also was a seven-time all-star and won five Gold Gloves. He was the runner-up for the American League MVP award in 1962 to New York teammate Mickey Mantle.

After retiring as a player, Richardson moved into college coaching. He spent nine years as the head coach at South Carolina and four seasons at Liberty, compiling a record of 361-297. In 1975, Richardson guided South Carolina to a 51-6 record and a runner-up finish in the College World Series. He now lives in his native Sumter, S.C.

Salem Buccaneers owner Kelvin Bowles will be the master of ceremonies at the Hot Stove Banquet. The banquet begins with a social hour at 6 p.m., with dinner and the induction at 7 p.m.

Tickets for the dinner banquet, which cost $25, are on sale at the Salem Civic Center box office; in Roanoke at The Roanoker Restaurant on Colonial Avenue Southwest and at Gary Oyler Insurance on Brambleton Avenue Southwest; and in Rocky Mount at Meadow Spring Land & Realty on Main Street.
