HIGHLAND ENDS 36-GAME LOSING STREAK
Shawn Harvey poured in 29 points and Micah Ginn added 24 to pace Highland to an 80-78 Pioneer District boys' basketball upset of Lexington on Friday night, ending the Rams' 36-game losing streak.Highland (1-8 overall, 1-8 Pioneer) had not won since Jan. 22, 1990, when it beat Rockbridge 55-52. In the Rams' 36-game losing streak, they had only one game in which they lost by less than double figures.
Lexington is 5-4, 3-4.
The Rams made seven of 13 chances at the free-throw line in the fourth quarter to hold off Lexington.
Gavin Clark scored 21 points to pace Lexington. \
Baltimore Dunbar 66
Oak Hill 57
ERIE, Pa. - Baltimore Dunbar, the nation's top-ranked high-school basketball team by USA Today, defeated the Warriors in the McDonald's Classic.
Oak Hill (20-2), ranked fourth, raced to a 10-0 lead in the first three minutes, but shot poorly from the floor for the rest of the game.
Dunbar (14-0) outscored the Warriors 32-14 the rest of the first half to lead 32-24 at the break. Oak Hill never got closer than three points the rest of the way.
Oak Hill averages nearly 90 points, but shot only 42 percent from the field, was 11-of-20 on free throws and went 0-of-6 from 3-point range.
Brian Thompson had 16 points and Jeff McInnis 14 for the Warriors.
Dunbar was led by Donta Bright with 23 points and Michael Lloyd with 14.

Carroll County rallied from eight points down after three quarters to hand Salem its first loss in a non-district game at the Spartans' gym.
Salem (3-1) led 45-37 heading into the fourth quarter, but the Spartans missed three straight one-and-one opportunities to allow the Cavaliers (6-4) back in it.
Ben Sumner scored eight of his 10 points in the fourth quarter to spark Carroll County.
Jason Stockner had 17 points to pace Carroll, and Mark Byington had 16 to lead Salem. \

WYTHEVILLE - George Wythe used a second-quarter burst to win a Hogoheegee District game.
Trailing by three points after the first quarter, the Maroons bolted to a 33-23 halftime lead. Tracy Brown had two 3-pointers in the comeback, and Sie Dickinson had 11 of his 22 points.
Patrick Brooks led Chilhowie (2-4, 1-2) with 27 points. For George Wythe (5-4, 3-0), Chris Waddell had 12 and Brown finished with 11.
Chilhowie never got closer than six in the second half. \
Northwood 62
Rural Retreat 39
RURAL RETREAT - The Indians led at halftime but cold shooting doomed them in the Hogoheegee District game.
Northwood (6-1, 4-0) outscored Rural Retreat (1-7, 0-5) 41-12 in the second half, led by Johnny Cregger's 12 points. Rural Retreat made five of 21 field goals (24 percent) in the second half.
The Indians played a diamond-and-one defense against 20-points-per-game scorer Jason Clendenin and held him to nine points. However, Cregger finished with 15 and Jason Griffin had 16.
Northwood took the lead for good with about two minutes left in the third quarter. \

Glenvar shot 53 percent from the field and remained undefeated with a Pioneer District victory over the Chargers.
The Highlanders (6-0, 6-0) built a 15-point halftime lead, and Bath County (6-3, 6-2) never got closer than 10 in the second half.
Jason Woolwine scored 14 points, Matt Woolwine 12, Steve Ashworth 12 and Scott Highberger 12 for Glenvar.
Matt Sherrard led Bath County with 17 points and Lee Phillips chipped in 10. \

COVINGTON - The Cougars roared to a Pioneer District victory with an impressive first half, making 20 of 30 field-goal attempts in the opening 16 minutes.
Covington (5-3, 5-1) built a 54-28 lead by halftime and finished with six double-figure scorers. Senior center Tony Jeter's 21 points led the winners, who shot 64 percent (34-of-53) for the game.
Joey Carter scored 14 points for the Rockets (3-5, 3-3). \

FAIRFIELD - The Fighting Blues pulled out a Pioneer District victory in the final two minutes.
Parry McCluer (3-3, 2-2) stole the ball with a little more than a minute left and scored to break a tie. After Rockbridge missed a shot, the Fighting Blues scored again to seize control.
Paige Owens led the Blues with 12 points.
Rockbridge (3-7, 2-6) got 11 points from William Sensabaugh. \

BUCHANAN - Ryan Shotwell capped a career-high scoring night with a layup with one second left as the Knights won a Pioneer District game.
Craig County guard David McPherson, who had 31 points - 24 in the second half - tied the score at 48 with 40 seconds left, bringing his team back from a 10-point deficit at the end of the third quarter. Then, the Rockets got the ball with a chance to take the lead, but McPherson was called for charging with 13 seconds left.
James River attacked the Rockets' halfcourt press and Shotwell dribbled in from the wing and scored the winner. Shotwell finished with 20 points, and teammate Chad Caldwell had 13 points and 11 rebounds.
The Knights (5-4, 5-2) played without three injured starters. Craig County is 1-8, 1-5. \

BLAND - Grayson County scored the game's first eight points and ran away with a Mountain Empire District victory.
Bonner Satterwhite had 23 points and Mitch Hawks 18 for the Blue Devils (6-3, 5-1). Kevin King led Bland (0-5, 0-5) with 11 points.
Bland played its second straight game without top scorer Toby Dotson, who averages more than 20 points. \

NARROWS - The Green Wave pulled away in the fourth quarter to register a Mountain Empire District victory.
Narrows (2-3, 2-3) broke open a close game by outscoring the Eagles 25-10 in the fourth.
Tinker Wills led the Green Wave with 13 points and eight rebounds. Kelly Lowe chipped in 11 points and three other players had nine apiece.
Rocky Gap (3-4, 2-4) got a game-high 14 points from Kyle Gibson and 11 points from Joe Cromer. \

MARTINSVILLE - The Bulldogs never trailed in collecting a Piedmont District triumph.
Tunstall (3-6, 3-4) rallied in the fourth quarter to pull to three points with about two minutes left, thanks in part to Khris Law's 11 points in the quarter. However, Martinsville (7-1, 6-1) held off the rally as Lamont Martin scored eight of his 16 points in the quarter.
Tarrace Carter led Tunstall with 23 points. Michael Frazier added 10 for Martinsville. \

RINGGOLD - Odell Hodge scored 28 points and Ronnie Jackson added 25 as Laurel Park led from start to finish in a Piedmont District game.
Lonzey Robertson added 15 and Chauncey Strange 12 for the Lancers (8-2, 7-0), who remained unbeaten in district play.
Sonny Motley scored 23 points for the Wildcats (3-7, 1-6). Roderick Davis chipped in 13 and Brian Gunn 12. \

RIDGEWAY - The Warriors opened the game with a 29-7 run and cruised to a Piedmont District rout of the Cavaliers.
Derwin Hylton led Magna Vista (8-1, 6-1) with a game-high 18 points. Rodney Redd added 16, Rodney Tanks 14 and Marcus Toney 13 for the Warriors, who had 17 steals.
Lavelton Pope led Chatham with 15 points. \

STUART - Fieldale-Collinsville outscored the Cougars by 14 points at the free-throw line in a Piedmont District game.
The Cavaliers (6-3, 4-3) drained 15 of 24 free throws, while Patrick County (0-9, 0-7) converted only one of seven.
Scott Chitwood scored 14 points and Mario Walker 13 for Fieldale-Collinsville.
Jonathan Vaughn and Chad Joyce scored 10 apiece for the Cougars. \

BASSETT - The Bengals made five of six chances at the free-throw line in overtime to hold off the Hawks in a Piedmont District game.
Artimuss Wade, who led Bassett with 29 points, nailed a 3-pointer with nine seconds left in regulation to tie the score at 63 and force the extra period.
The Bengals hit eight of 14 3-pointers and made 12 of 15 from the line to offset Gretna's rebounding edge.
Keith Largin scored 11 points for Bassett (4-4, 4-4). Gretna (4-6, 2-5) got 27 points from Eric Waller. \
Marion 56

JONESVILLE - Eddie Boothe led all scorers with 25 points and the Scarlet Hurricane whirled past the Generals in a Highlands District matchup.
Marion (8-1, 2-0) trailed 37-36 entering the fourth quarter, but outscored Lee (4-4, 1-1) 20-9 the rest of the way. The 10-point margin of victory was the largest lead of the game.
Todd Light had 16 points, and Eric Mitchell and Rick Mullins had 14 each for Lee. \
Thursday's games
\ Alleghany 89, Harrisonburg 66: At Covington, Tommy Crawford came off the bench in the first quarter and hit four 3-point shots to help jump-start Alleghany's offense and the Mountaineers cruised to victory in the non-district game.
The Mountaineers (6-3) were awesome from behind the arc, sinking nine of 12 3-point attempts in the game. Todd Wheatley led Alleghany with 22 points, Crawford added 14 and Jay Easton had 13.
Harrisonburg (2-3) was led by Howard Bird with 17 points. \
Lynchburg Christian 70, Carlisle 56: At Martinsville, LCA pulled away in the final half for the Virginia Independent Conference victory.
Gabe Lyons led the winners with a game-high 28 points. Carlisle (1-5 overall, 1-4 VIC) was paced by Trent Bowles with 15 and Donnie Pennington with 14. \
