EMICK SEEKS APPOINTMENT TO CORPORATION COMMISSION

Former state Sen. Dudley Emick of Fincastle is a candidate for a vacancy on the State Corporation Commission, he confirmed Friday.

Emick, 52, is a lawyer who retired from the Senate this week after 14 years. He was known for his mastery of legislative tactics and for an independent streak that often put him at odds with his Democratic colleagues.

Emick said he is interested in the vacancy left by Judge Thomas P. Harwood Jr., who is retiring after 19 years on the three-member SCC.

"I think it would be intellectually satisfying and something where I can make a real contribution," Emick said.

Emick said he practiced law in front of the SCC before he entered politics in 1972, but he has not appeared there since.

The SCC regulates Virginia utilities, insurance, banking, railroads and trucking.

Emick is one of at least three potential candidates. Others are Richmond lawyer Hullihen W. Moore and C. William Cramme III, a veteran lawyer in the Legislative Services Department of state government.

The Senate Commerce and Labor Committee and the House Corporations Insurance and Banking Committee will conduct interviews of the candidates Jan. 20 and 21. After that, Democrats in each House will caucus to choose their favorite candidate. - Staff report
