FLOYD ROLLS PAST SHAWSVILLE

Floyd County raced to a 23-7 first-quarter lead and coasted to an 84-44 Mountain Empire District boys' basketball triumph over Shawsville on Friday night.

Fred Via with 20 points and Travis Crawford with 18 paced Floyd County (7-1 overall, 5-1 Mountain Empire). Mike Rook had 14 points for Shawsville (1-6, 0-6). \

ALTAVISTA - The Colonels, ignored in the first Group AA poll of the season, remained unbeaten with an easy Seminole District victory at home.

Altavista (9-0 overall, 9-0 Seminole) got 23 points from Mark Johnson, including five 3-point goals. Eddie McMillan added 22 points for the winners, who had an 11-1 advantage in 3-pointers.

The Cavaliers (5-4, 5-4) were led by Keith Enslow's 16 points. \

SOUTH BOSTON - The Comets surged past the Eagles in the second half to register a non-district victory.

Halifax County (6-2) trailed 31-30 at halftime but came out hot in the third quarter to take control. Calvin Slayton led the Comets with 24 points.

Franklin County (1-8) got 17 points from Chris Mattox and 16 from Alessandro Lima.

\ Narrows 72

Rocky Gap 54

NARROWS - The Green Wave pulled away in the fourth quarter to register a Mountain Empire District victory.

Narrows (2-3, 2-3) broke open a close game by outscoring the Eagles 25-10 in the fourth.

Tinker Wills led the Green Wave with 13 points and eight rebounds. Rocky Gap (3-4, 2-4) got a game-high 14 points from Kyle Gibson. \

Galax 87

Auburn 78

RINER - Galax, led by Jeff Spells, went inside much of the night for a Mountain Empire District road victory.

The Maroon Tide (4-4, 4-2) got most of its points inside 10 feet, as Spells scored 32 and Jason Ross added 22.

Brian Sale, with 24 points, led the Eagles (5-3, 4-2). Terry Millirons added 19 for Auburn. \

Amherst 60

Liberty 48

BEDFORD - The Minutemen let a second-half lead slip away in a Seminole District loss to the Lancers.

Liberty (2-7, 2-7) led 40-37 with one quarter to play, but Amherst (7-3, 7-3) outscored the Minutemen 23-8 in the fourth.

Justin Johannes scored 20 points for the Lancers. Chris Dean led Liberty with 12 points. \

Fort Chiswell 85

Giles 54

MAX MEADOWS - Fort Chiswell outscored Giles 54-27 in the second half to pull away for a Mountain Empire District victory and remain unbeaten.

After leading 31-27 at halftime, the Pioneers (8-0, 6-0) put together a 14-4 run to start the third quarter and an 18-2 surge to begin the fourth.

Brian Lampkins had 19 points for Fort Chiswell. Rusty Stafford scored 16 and Brent Rampey 10 for the Spartans (1-5, 1-5). \

Gateway Christian 86

Rock of Ages 48

DANVILLE - Tom Brookman came off the bench to score 20 points and lead the Crusaders to an easy first-round victory in the Southall Christian Invitational.

Tim Henderson added 19, Sam Moore 18 and Matt Linkous 11 for Gateway Christian (6-3), which outscored the Reidsville, N.C., team 45-16 in the second half.

Halifax 29

The Eagles kept Halifax winless by whipping the Comets in a non-district game.

Betsy Forbes scored 11 points and Dawn Webb 10 to lead Franklin County (3-8). Tracie Elam had a game-high 13 for Halifax (0-7). \
