LABOR NEEDS DECENT WAGES AND BENEFITS
OH BOY! There are some things that I would like to say about Joel Turner's article on the Red Cross dedication. When leaders of the Southwest Virginia Building & Construction Trades Council spoke out at City Council meetings, we spoke not for local contractors but for any contractor who will hire local labor and will pay a livable wage in addition to medical and pension benefits.
We would like to see a survey by the Roanoke Times & World-News of the wages and benefits paid by local non-union contractors as opposed to union contractors who have performed work in this area. A good place to start would be the new UPS Service Center. Union craftsmen and non-union craftsmen were used on this project.
It is in the best interest of all workers in the Roanoke Valley and surrounding areas to provide a decent standard of living and health care and pension for their families. Let the survey speak for itself. CLINE W. TONEY President, Southwest Virginia Building & Construction Trades Council ROANOKE
