CAVALIERS TROUNCE N.C. STATE 101-70

After eight minutes Saturday afternoon, North Carolina State had made eight of nine shots from the field and tipped in its only miss.

At that point, the Wolfpack trailed by seven points.

Unbeaten Virginia, the No. 1-ranked team in women's college basketball, took advantage of 30 Wolfpack turnovers - 20 in the first half - and routed the defending ACC champion 101-70.

A crowd of 6,061 watched the Cavaliers stretch their lead to 34 points in improving to 13-0, 3-0 in the ACC. State, ranked 11th, is 8-5 and 1-3.

Junior center Heather Burge had 26 points in 20 minutes to lead four UVa players in double figures. Dawn Staley, who did not have a field-goal attempt in the first half, finished with 13 points and 10 assists.

"I was doing the things I enjoy doing, like passing the ball to my teammates," said Staley, the 1991 Division I player of the year.

State trailed 48-34 at the half despite shooting 65 percent from the field. When Virginia scored 37 points in the first 9:46 of the second half, it was over.

The score was 99-67 when Staley and backcourt mate Tammi Reiss, who had 18 points, came out of the game for good with 3:08 remaining.

"They have the killer instinct," State coach Kay Yow said. "When they're ahead, they want to pour it on. That's a great quality." \
