RADFORD WINS A CLOSE ONE
Stephen Barber's twisting layup in traffic with eight seconds remaining lifted Radford to an 89-88 basketball victory over Maryland-Baltimore County on Saturday night at the UMBC Fieldhouse.Doug Day scored 33 points, including a fieldhouse-record eight 3-pointers, but it was Barber who scored the last four for Radford (6-6) to provide the margin of victory. Barber finished with 13 points.
"Even with our small lineup, we somehow were able to get Stephen a mismatch down low the last two possessions," said Radford coach Ron Bradley. "I'm not exactly sure how we got that mismatch but I'm glad we did."
Brian Schmall intercepted UMBC's inbounds pass with three seconds remaining to preserve the victory, the Highlanders' second in their past three games.
Radford squandered a 51-40 halftime lead, and the Retrievers (2-9) led by seven points in the second half.
Soni Nixon's free throw with 3:53 to play gave UMBC a 79-72 lead, but the Highlanders went on an 8-1 run to tie the score at 80 on Day's 3-pointer with 2:27 to play.
The Highlanders, who begin Big South Conference play Monday with a home game against Charleston Southern, put together a 10-0 run to end the first half with a 51-40 lead. Schmall, who finished with 15 points, had five during the surge.
Radford overcame foul trouble, surviving the disqualifications of starting guard Chris Hawkins, starting center Pete Reece and substitute center Antoine Dalton.
Hawkins was playing against his uncle, Earl Hawkins, who coaches UMBC.
