APPENDECTOMY SIDELINES UVA RESERVE GUARD

Virginia basketball player Doug Smith had his appendix removed Sunday and won't play Tuesday against Georgia Tech, school officials said.

It is not known how many games Smith will miss. A 6-foot-1 junior guard, he has played in all 11 of UVa's games this year as a reserve and is averaging four points and 2.2 assists per game.

Smith went to the University of Virginia Hospital's emergency room early Sunday morning and had endoscopic surgery shortly thereafter. - Staff report
