CALDWELL BUTLER'S SON MAKES BID FOR HOUSE SEAT

Henry N. Butler, a George Mason University law professor and son of former Rep. Caldwell Butler, R-Roanoke, says he wants to run for the new 11th Congressional District seat in Northern Virginia.

Butler's announcement makes him the first formal GOP candidate for the district.

Butler stressed his background in economics and business Saturday, and assailed Congress as an "arrogant" institution that "lives above the law."

Butler, 37, a lifelong Virginian, has taught at George Mason's law school since 1986 and previously headed the school's Law and Economics Center. He has never held elective office.

Butler was introduced by former Virginia Attorney General Marshall Coleman, his campaign chairman, and flanked by his father, former Gov. Linwood Holton, former Reagan budget director James Miller and several other Republican politicians.

The 11th District, created last year because of population growth in Northern Virginia during the 1980s, snakes from Herndon through central Fairfax County and into eastern Prince William County.

State Del. Jack Rollison, R-Woodbridge, said Saturday he is considering a run for the seat.
