EDUCATION PROBLEM ALL TOO EVIDENT
IN A COMMENTARY by Richard Lodish on Jan. 8, Christopher Cross, former assistant secretary of education, is quoted as having said in an article titled "Student effort: The key to higher standards" that "educators have been loathe to endorse strategies that require hard work from students as a condition for learning."Tut, Mr. Cross or Mr. Lodish, or whoever confused the words "loath" and "loathe." Is this not a perfect example of the educational problems the article was attempting to point out? PAUL F. ZWEIFEL BLACKSBURG
