KIRK, THOMAS A., DR. Dr. Thomas Allen Kirk, Jr., age 68, veteran Roanoke surgeon, died Monday morning at his home after a lengthy illness. A native of Roanoke, he was the son of Dr. and Mrs. T. Allen Kirk, Sr. His father, also a Roanoke surgeon, was a past president of the American Rose Society. Dr. Kirk was a graduate of Jefferson High School (Roanoke); Hampden-Sydney College (Farmville); and of the University of Virginia School of Medicine (Charlottesville). He began his private practice of surgery in 1957. He was a member of numerous professional societies including the Roanoke Academy of Medicine, The Virginia Surgical Society, The Medical Society of Virginia, The American Medical Association, and The American Society of Abdominal Surgeons. He had written and presented numerous professional papers. Dr. Kirk served as an enlisted man in the U.S. Navy in World War II and was commissioned an officer in the Naval Reserve Medical Corps. upon his graduation from the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He was called to active duty in the Navy during the Korean War, serving in Korea. Later he served with several Naval Reserve units in Roanoke, retiring in 1983 with the rank of Captain in the Naval Reserve Medical Corps. Dr. Kirk was an avid dog lover. He has served as president of the Roanoke Kennel Club, as president of the Scottish Terrier Club of America, as president of Scottish Terrier of Western Virginia, and as president of the Associated Terrier Club of New York. He and his wife had served as judges of terriers, toys, and Old English Sheepdogs at many dog shows in this country and in England, Scotland, Wales, Canada and South America. He wrote many papers about dogs. Surviving are his wife, Evelyn D. Kirk; two children, Laura Kirk Zimmerman, Roanoke; T. Allen Kirk, III, Seminole, Fla.; a sister, Elizabeth Kirk Taylor, Venice, Fla.; and two grandchildren, James Kirk Zimmerman and Caroline Elizabeth Kirk. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Thursday from Oakey's Roanoke Chapel with the Rev. David A. Kirk officiating. Interment will follow in Fair View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Virginia Dog Owners Educational Corporation (3840 Woodridge Road, Troutville, VA 24175). Friends may call after 5:00 p.m. Tuesday at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday.
