RADFORD RALLIES FOR WIN HIGHLANDERS UPEND BIG SOUTH LEADERS

To most observers, the Radford University Dedmon Center is a bright, clean, modernistic fabric-topped sports arena.

To Charleston Southern's basketball team, the joint is a morgue.

The Buccaneers sailed into town undefeated in the Big South Conference standings, alone in first place and the league's big surprise. They left town a loser. Again.

Radford rallied from 10 points back, finally wearing out the exhausted Bucs en route to a 69-64 victory.

"This isn't an easy place to play," Charleston Southern coach Gary Edwards said. "Especially for us."

The Bucs have lost seven of eight here, which is really no surprise because Radford had been poison wherever they play. The Highlanders (7-6 overall, 1-0 Big South) own a nine-game winning streak over Charleston Southern (7-4, 3-1).

This was the third consecutive game in which Radford had to come from behind, two resulting in victory. The Highlanders, who had trailed twice by 10 points in the first half and 42-33 in the second half, took the lead for good on a Don Burgess layup to make it 58-57 with 6:30 to play.

"It's impressive how they're so tough-minded," Radford coach Ron Bradley said of his team. "They find ways to win. Each time, it seems as though it's somebody different, too."

Monday, the contributions came from many sources. Doug Day, who had lost his shooting touch during a recent stretch, bounced back to score 18 points. Chris Hawkins shook off a sore thigh to score 16 (6-of-8 shooting from the floor) in 35 minutes.

Stephen Barber scored 10 points, had five assists and six rebounds, and guarded the Bucs' best player, Darnell Sneed, who was leading the league in scoring with more than 20 points per game. Barber held him to 19, nine in the second half, two in the last 8:05.

Then there was Don Burgess, who at 6 feet 6, played center in a four-guard set for most of the last 10 minutes. He finished with 15 points, a team-leading seven rebounds, four steals and three assists. Burgess' tip of a Barber miss with 34 seconds sealed it. sh: :wq!: not found RADFORD STORY #63 TOPIC 2* KEYWORD DESK AUTHOR:REMOTE30001/14/92 SP, CHARLESTON SOUTHERN-RADFORDPAGE B5 headline byline
