NAME ON CAMPUS

MERRIE WINFREY, daughter of William and Pamela Winfrey of Blacksburg, is the first South Atlantic Conference recipient of the First Union Corporation Scholar Athlete Award.

Winfrey, a 1988 Blacksburg High School graduate, is a volleyball player at Wingate College in Wingate, N.C., where she is a setter for the Lady Bulldogs and carries a 3.69 overall grade-point average as an English major.

The award, presented at the South Atlantic Conference's volleyball championship dinner, recognizes outstanding athletes in each of the 11 SAC-sponsored sports programs at eight colleges in North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.

To be eligible, a student must be an athlete varsity letter winner, have a minimum 3.3 GPA, participate in campus organizations and exhibit leadership qualities.

Winfrey is vice president of the Alpha Chi Honor Society and a member of the Phi Eta Sigma Freshman Honor Society, the United Collegiate Assistance Network and The Gate yearbook staff.

Winfrey, who also was named to the 1992 "Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities," plans to pursue a graduate degree in literature.

\ DAVID PAUL DUNCAN, son of Paul and Elfreda Duncan of Christiansburg, has been named to the 1992 edition of "Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities." He is one of 32 students at High Point University in North Carolina who were selected as outstanding campus leaders.

A senior business administration and economics major, Duncan is involved in the Delta Mu Delta Honors Society, Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and the Mock Trial Team.

He has belonged to the North Carolina Student Legislature and was a student representative on the High Point University educational policies committee.

\ JENNIFER BROOKE TOMCHIN, daughter of David and Ellen Tomchin of Blacksburg, was inducted into Phi Eta Sigma Academic Honorary at the University of Virginia.

A second-year student, she also was named to the dean's list with a 4.0 grade point average.

Tomchin is a 1990 graduate of Blacksburg High School.

\ VALANDA LEIGH NELSON, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Nelson of Christiansburg, performed a bassoon recital in the Fletcher Music Center Recital Hall at the East Carolina University School of Music in Greenville, N.C., where she is a senior.

Nelson, a candidate for a bachelor of music degree in music therapy, played selections by Carl Maria von Weber and Paul Hindemith and a satirical composition by Peter Schickele.

She was accompanied by a pianist and a tuba player.

\ JANET LYNN KETTERER, daughter of Peter and Virginia Ketterer of Christiansburg, was named to the dean's list with a 4.0 grade-point average at East Tennessee State University where she is majoring in social work.

\ DEBORAH LICKLITER and ZHENG "SUN" QI of Blacksburg and MONICA "NICOLE" CROMER of Christiansburg were named to the dean's list of the College of Health Sciences in Roanoke for the fall term.

Lickliter is a general education student, and Qi and Cromer are nursing education students.

\ DAVID RYAN of Radford was named to the president's list at the College of Health Sciences in Roanoke for the fall term.

Ryan is a student in the physical-therapist assistant program.

\ J. SUZANNE DETTART, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C.R. Gardner Jr. of Shawsville, received intermediate honors at Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg for maintaining a 3.75 or better grade-point average during her first two years of study.

Dettart, a 1989 Shawsville High School graduate, is a junior majoring in sociology.
