2 HURT IN SALEM VALLEYDALE PLANT
Two employees of a Lynchburg contractor suffered minor injuries and the work force of Valleydale Packers in Salem was evacuated after an ammonia pipeline ruptured Monday.A crew for G&B Insulation Co. was reinsulating refrigeration pipes when a\ -inch pipeline broke at about 10:30 a.m., said Ken Brown, Valleydale general manager.
One of the workers in the crew fell off a ladder and another had ammonia burns, Brown said. The man injured in the fall was admitted to Lewis-Gale Hospital for treatment of a fractured heel, said David Middag of the hospital staff. He did not have the man's name.
Employees in the meat processing department of Valleydale were sent home and the second shift was canceled, Brown said.
The company's maintenance workers ventilated the plant and used water to dissipate the ammonia, Brown said.
