RETIRED SURGEON THOMAS KIRK DIES
Dr. Thomas Allen Kirk Jr., a retired Roanoke surgeon, died at his home in Roanoke Monday morning after a long illness. He was 68.A Roanoke native, Kirk went to Jefferson High School and Hampden-Sydney College and earned his medical degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He started a private practice in surgery in 1957.
He was a member of the Roanoke Academy of Medicine, the Virginia Surgical Society, the Medical Society of Virginia, the American Medical Association and American Society of Abdominal Surgeons.
He also served with several Naval Reserve units in Roanoke.
An avid dog lover, Kirk served as president of the Roanoke Kennel Club, the Scottish Terrier Club of America and the Virginia Federation of Dog Clubs and Breeders. He was a licensed judge of terriers, toy dogs and Old English Sheepdogs.
Surviving are his wife, Evelyn; a son, T. Allen Kirk III, of Seminole, Fla.; and a daughter, Laura Zimmerman, of Roanoke.
