ALLEGHANY REPELS RADFORD COMEBACK

Alleghany saw a 17-point fourth-quarter lead shrink to three but held off charging Radford for a 71-65 non-district boys' basketball victory Tuesday night.

The Mountaineers (7-3) led 60-43 with four minutes remaining, but missed six of seven free throws - including three one-and-ones - over a three-minute span as Radford (2-8) pulled to 63-60.

But Alleghany, which made 13 of 21 free throws for the game, converted the free throws down the stretch to hold onto its lead.

The Mountaineers took a 33-21 halftime lead with the help of four second-quarter 3-pointers, two by Brian Freeland. Alleghany outscored Radford 21-11 in the quarter.

The Bobcats scored 33 points in the fourth quarter after having 32 in the first three. Kris Smith had 13 of his 18 points in the final quarter, Duane Pierson had 10 of his 15 and Chris Hairston eight of his game-high 22.

Hairston had five 3-pointers in the game. The teams combined for a total of 14 3-pointers and 60 fourth-quarter points.

Jay Easton powered Alleghany by scoring 13 of his team-high 20 points in the final quarter. Todd Wheatley finished with 12. \

Marion 64

John Battle 44

MARION - Eric Hungate scored a game-high 23 points and had seven steals as the Scarlet Hurricane blew away the Trojans in a Highlands District game.

Eddie Boothe added 13 points for Marion (9-1, 3-0), which bolted to a 17-7 first-quarter bulge and waltzed. Shane Yates paced John Battle (4-5, 1-2) with 10 points. \

Laurel Park 85

Fieldale-Collinsville 62

MARTINSVILLE - Six-foot-10 senior center Odell Hodge scored a season-high 38 points as the Lancers stayed unbeaten in the Piedmont District.

Ronnie Jackson added 18 points for Laurel Park (9-2, 8-0), which broke open a tight game with defensive pressure in the second half.

Scott Chitwood led the Cavaliers (6-4, 4-4) with 16 points, and Thad Wade added 13. \

Parry McCluer 55

Lexington 53

BUENA VISTA - Eric Carter sank five 3-pointers, including two in the final quarter, as Parry McCluer rallied to win a Pioneer District game.

The Fighting Blues (4-3, 3-2) trailed 45-38 after three quarters but outscored Lexington (5-5, 3-5) 17-8 in the fourth.

Brian Sizemore led Parry McCluer with 17 points and Carter added 15, all on 3-pointers. Leslie Gray chipped in with 13.

Gavin Clark paced the Scarlet Hurricane with 14 points and Ethan Emma finished with 12. \

Covington 59

James River 45

COVINGTON - Ramon Sampson, Tony Jeter and Neal Dressler all scored in double figures as the Cougars picked up a Pioneer District victory over the Knights.

Sampson scored 16 points, Jeter 13 and Dressler 12 as Covington (6-3, 6-1) shot 51 percent (24-of-47) to overcome James River's deliberate attack. Jeter also had nine rebounds for Covington, which held a 29-17 rebounding advantage.

Ramone Waldron led James River (5-5, 5-3) with 12 points. \

Natural Bridge 74

Rockbridge 45

NATURAL BRIDGE - The Rockets jumped to a 15-point halftime lead and cruised to a Pioneer District victory on the road.

Natural Bridge (4-5, 4-3) was led by Joey Carter's 20 points. Robert Austin added 18. Rockbridge (3-8, 2-7) had one double-figure scorer in William Sensabaugh, with 10 points. \

Monday's game

\ North Cross 59, Carlisle 50: Marcus Cardwell had 12 points and Hal Johnson added 10 as the Raiders (5-7, 2-2) held off the Chiefs (1-9, 0-5) in a Virginia Independent Conference boys' game.

North Cross, which led 34-18 at halftime on Steve Baucom's 80-foot 3-pointer at the buzzer, built several big leads only to see Carlisle make a run until finally coming up short.

For Carlisle, Trent Bowles had a game-high 18 points, Andy Sands had 17 and Donnie Pennington had 11. \
