NEW BELLE HETH ROOF, SCHOOL COMPUTERS OK'D
Belle Heth Elementary School will get a new roof this spring. Radford City Council voted at its Monday night meeting to fund the roof and to buy computers for the city's elementary classrooms.Only the roof on the main building at Belle Heth - not the 5-year-old addition - will be replaced. The roof and the computers had been requested by the Radford School Board through a special appropriation of $156,825; the money came from unspent 1990-91 school funds.
With the additional 17 Apple computers and 17 printers, every elementary teacher will have a classroom computer for pupil use.
Council also voted to accept the recycling drop-off center proposal for of one year.
The center will be at 17th Street near the public works building. It will be managed by the city's Public Works Department.
More visible alternate sites were investigated, but they did not provide the security the 17th Street site does. It was pointed out that the Radford Woman's Club's newspaper-collection site has been vandalized and that recyclables have been stolen.
The city's costs for the center are expected to be $200 per month. It has been proposed that the cost of the center be paid from the state's 1991-92 litter grant.
