REBELS END SKID

At last, the streak is over.

Winless for nine straight games and 19 long days, the Roanoke Valley Rebels finally shook their losing ways Tuesday night, skating to a 2-0 East Coast Hockey League win over the Raleigh IceCaps.

Goaltender Mike James turned aside 39 shots in scoring his second shutout of the season, both against Raleigh.

After yielding 66 goals in the nine-game skid, the Rebels defense put the clamps on the IceCaps.

Newcomer Ken Blum and Brett Stewart each scored goals to provide James all the offense he needed.

The victory was soured somewhat by an injury to center Peter Kasowski, who returned to the club Monday from Salt Lake City (IHL). Kasowski was struck in the neck by a puck and was expected to spend Tuesday night in a Raleigh hospital for observation, Rebels owner Henry Brabham said.

\ ICE CHIPS: It was Roanoke Valley's first win since Dec. 26, when they scored their only other shutout of the season - 4-0 over Raleigh. The victory ended a 10-game road losing streak for Roanoke Valley, which is 4-13-2 on enemy ice. . . . James' two shutouts make him the only goalie in the ECHL this season with more than one. . . . The loss halted the IceCaps' six-game winning streak.
