SALARY CUTS ON AGENDA IN WYTHEVILLE

One new member of the Wythe County Board of Supervisors tried to cut the governing body's salary at his first meeting Tuesday.

Newly elected Supervisor Jack Crosswell made a motion that the supervisors cut their salaries by 10 percent. When all other agencies and departments are facing cutbacks, he said, the board should lead by example.

Nobody seconded his motion.

But they did agree that the county should provide inclement-weather clothing to its landfill workers, and with Supervisor Alan Dunford to do the same for county Water Department employees.

Both the county and town governing bodies expressed concern over rumors of closing the state Department of Agriculture regional laboratory in Wytheville and moving it to Blacksburg. Department officials have assured them that the rumors are unfounded.
