FARM FRESH PRESIDENT TO BUY NICK'S
Nick's Grocery in Northwest Roanoke, which went up for sale within a month of opening, is getting a new owner - the former president of the company selling it.Keith E. Alessi, 37, president of Farm Fresh Inc., is leaving the grocery chain to buy and run 14 stores in Farm Fresh's Nick's Market division. He also will acquire four stores in the Newport News-Hampton area, five in Richmond and one each in Norfolk, Waynesboro, Fork Union and Urbanna. A Nick's store on Plantation Road in Roanoke is not part of his purchase.
In December, Farm Fresh of Norfolk decided to sell its 38 Nick's stores, saying that the smaller markets were slowing the company's growth.
The opening of the Melrose Avenue store followed a four-year campaign by Total Action Against Poverty and banks to get a grocery in the neighborhood. - Staff report
