WAY CLEARED FOR DEPORTATION OF IRA MEMBER
The Supreme Court cleared the way Wednesday for deportation of Joseph Doherty, an Irish Republican Army member convicted of murder and sentenced to life in a British prison. The justices ruled 5-3 that Doherty, imprisoned for more than eight years in the United States while fighting extradition to the United Kingdom, is not entitled to a new asylum hearing.
The Bush administration is expected to move quickly to deport him. A Justice Department official who requested anonymity dismissed the significance of a separate appeal Doherty has made to the high court, saying it is now moot.
The case has generated enormous interest here and abroad, raising political and diplomatic issues as well as questions about whether Doherty, 37, has received fair treatment. His supporters regard him as a hero; his detractors call him a terrorist.
