SALEM BUCS NAME MANAGER FOR 1992
The Pittsburgh Pirates have named former major leaguer John Wockenfuss as manager of the Salem Buccaneers for the 1992 Carolina League season. He replaces Stan Cliburn, who coached the Bucs for the past two seasons before being released by the Pirates.Wockenfuss, a 42-year old native of Welch, W.Va., spent 12 seasons in the majors as catcher with the Detroit Tigers (1974-83) and Philadelphia Phillies (1984-85). He had a lifetime batting average of .262.
Wockenfuss was out of baseball last year but was a manager in the Detroit Tigers organization in 1989 and 1990. Rick Keeton, who was with the Augusta (Ga.) Pirates last season will be the Bucs pitching coach, and Bill Zick, who was also at Augusta, will be the trainer.
The Buccaneers will open the 1992 season on April 9 on a seven-game road trip against the Peninsula Pilots and Kinston Indians. Salem's home opener is April 16 against the Durham Bulls.
The Bucs will play host to the Carolina League All-Star game on July 22.
Season tickets for the 70-game home schedule are $175 for box seats, $140 for reserved and $110 for general admission. Tickets at the gate will be $5 for box, $4 and $3 for general admission. Senior citizens and children under 12 get a $1 discount. - Staff report
