SHERIFF'S DESK HAD $63,281 IN CASH STASHED
Federal agents looking for evidence of tax evasion, money laundering and fraud found $63,281 stashed in Bristol Sheriff Marshall E. Honaker's office desk, court documents revealed Wednesday.
Honaker, 55, has not been charged. But federal agents seized his home, three personal vehicles and private bank accounts in addition to numerous boxes of files from both the Sheriff's Department and the Bristol Courthouse.
A warrant said agents were looking for items that would "tend to show fraudulent intent and or knowledge . . . of tax evasion, money laundering, federal program fraud and mail fraud."
Sources told the Herald-Courier, a Bristol newspaper, that the probe centers on an embezzlement in which several hundred thousand dollars was said to have been channeled out of the Sheriff's Department. - Associated Press
