BOTETOURT SUPERVISORS TO GET SCHOOL PLAN

School officials will take their plan to build two new schools in Botetourt County to the Board of Supervisors at its next regular meeting Tuesday.

Earlier this month, the School Board approved a long-range plan to build a new middle school in Cloverdale and a new elementary school in Daleville, in addition to four new classrooms at Troutville Elementary School.

The $12 million plan, which includes several other lesser projects, is subject to approval by the supervisors, who ultimately must fund the school projects. County Administrator John Williamson said it is too early in the current budget process for the supervisors to take any action on the school wish list.

In other business Tuesday, the supervisors will hold a public hearing on a proposal to designate town water and sewer systems as public water systems. This would allow towns to require mandatory connections - and connection fees - of homes located within 250 feet of any town water or sewer line. Currently, only homes within 250 feet of county water lines, not town systems, are required to connect to the public system.

The supervisors also will hear from members of Valley Concerned Citizens: Haz Mat Alert, a county citizens group opposing a plan by Tarmac's Roanoke Cement Co. to burn hazardous waste at its Botetourt cement kiln.

The group is expected to present updated information related to its request that the county adopt an ordinance banning the Tarmac operation.

The board moved its regular monthly meeting from Monday to Tuesday because of the Martin Luther King holiday.
