THE TIPOFF

BLUES: John Hammond, the blues singer who has gained a lot of friends on previous visits to Roanoke, will perform tonight at 9:30 at The Iroquois Club.

Curley Ennis will back him up in a blues-flavored solo stint.

BLUEGRASS: The Osborne Brothers and the Lewis Family will present bluegrass and gospel music Saturday night at 7:30 at the Franklin County High School Auditorium.

Tickets are $8 in advance, $10 at the door.

The show is sponsored by the Rocky Mount Lions Club.\

COUNTRY: Virginia's own Roy Clark, hot picker and lead dog on the "Hee Haw" television show, will perform in concert Sunday at 3 and 7:30 p.m. at E.C. Glass Auditorium in Lynchburg.

Clark will be backed by Rodney Lay and the Wild West.

JAZZ: James "Plunky" Branch and his World Class Quartet will bring their mix of jazz, rhythm and blues, reggae and rap to the Lynchburg Fine Arts Center tonight for a show at 8 o'clock.

Branch, from Richmond, twice has received the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Fellowship Award.

DEBUT: The Chamber Orchestra of Southwest Virginia will perform Saturday night at 8 and Sunday afternoon at 3 in the acoustically rich Squires Recital Salon at Virginia Tech.

The new salon is regarded as an outstanding place to hear music. The orchestra features musicians from the Virginia Tech faculty and the Charleston, W.Va., and Charlotte, N.C., symphonies.

The program includes "Trittico Boticelliano" by Respighi, Symphony No. 52 by Haydn and "Music for the Theatre" by Aaron Copland.

Admission is $5 for the general public and $3 for students and senior citizens. For reservations, call 231-5615.\

JAZZ II: Violinist Joe Kennedy Jr. and pianist Peter Lederer will join bassist Clarence Seay and drummer Bill Ray for a lively session of jazz Tuesday night at Squires Haymarket Theatre at Virginia Tech.

THE CHARLOTTESVILLE THREE: The Monticello Trio, ensemble-in-residence at the University of Virginia, will perform Saturday night at 8 in Olin Theater at Roanoke College in Salem.

The concert is sponsored by the Roanoke Valley Chamber Music Society.

The program will include Haydn's Trio in A Major, "Trio, 1990-91" by Nicholas Maw, and the Trio in C minor, Op. 66, by Mendelssohn.

Composer Nicholas Maw will speak at 7:30 in Olin 325, and he will answer questions, if necessary, after the performance.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for those 18 and under. They'll be sold at the door, or you can call 375-2333.\

HOT TIP: There may be a few tickets left for Tuesday night's classical guitar concert by Christopher Parkening at Roanoke College.

They're priced at $20 apiece.

Parkening is the recognized heir to the Segovia tradition and a favorite with Roanoke College audiences. About 30 tickets remained for sale at mid-week.
