NURSING HOME HEAD TO RUN AGAINST PAYNE

A nursing-home administrator says he will seek the Republican nomination to challenge Rep. L.F. Payne, D-Nelson County in November.

William A. "Bill" Hurlburt, 55, has begun hiring a campaign staff and formally will announce his candidacy March 5.

"I've decided to do it," Hurlburt said Friday.

No other Republicans have announced they would challenge Payne, a conservative Democrat who won the 5th District seat in 1988. Payne was re-elected without opposition in 1990.

Hurlburt, who holds a master's degree in hospital administration from Columbia University, said he would make national health care reform a centerpiece of his campaign.

A native of upstate New York, Hurlburt worked in the Midwest before moving to Henry County three years ago to oversee Riverside Health Care Center in Danville.

Hurlburt said he has has been active in Republican politics, but this is his first attempt at elected office.
