SENATOR TO USE PAY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS
State Sen. Brandon Bell, R-Roanoke, will use $500 of his $18,000 legislative salary to set up scholarships in the Roanoke and Roanoke County schools. The Senate Rules Committee had urged senators to return 2 percent of their salary - or $360 - to the state to help during the current fiscal crunch.
Bell said he decided instead to set up $250 scholarships in both of the school divisions in his district.
"At least I'll know it'll go back to the Roanoke Valley," Bell said. "I feel better about where the money's going."
Bell said he will meet with each system's school superintendent later and work out the details of how the money will be spent.
