ADMIRALS SINK REBELS
When you've lost two straight and the coach is irate, who you gonna call? The Roanoke Valley Rebels, of course.
With top center Peter Kasowski in a Roanoke hospital, the Rebels were bounced 7-2 by the Hampton Roads Admirals, who scored on a season-high four power-play goals.
The victory was the Admirals' 11th in the past 12 meetings with Roanoke Valley and the fifth in six tries this season.
"It's just one bad thing after another," Rebels coach Roy Sommer said. "Now, we don't know how long Kasowski is going to be out or if he will be able to even come back this season."
Kasowski was admitted to a hospital Friday because of complications from an injury in the Rebels' 2-0 victory at Raleigh, N.C., on Tuesday. Kasowski was struck in the throat by a puck in the game but returned home with the club and practiced Wednesday.
"We thought Peter was OK, then suddenly he began to have some problems and could hardly talk," Sommer said. "The doctors are checking him out, trying to figure out what's wrong. Hopefully, we'll find out something [today] on his condition."
In Friday's game, a franchise record 8,974 spectators saw Hampton Roads' Al MacIsaac score three goals and newcomer Richie Walcott engage in his first fight. Walcott, who earned a notorious reputation as an enforcer in half a season with the Baltimore Skipjacks in the American Hockey Association, landed some quick blows against Roanoke Valley's Frank Bialowas, who countered with a head butt. Bialowas, who gave the Rebels' a short-lived 2-1 lead, received a five-minute match penalty for the head butt and a game misconduct. The Admirals' capitalized with a power-play goal by Randy Pearce to go ahead 3-2, and they never trailed again.
One problem for the Rebels was penalties, Sommer said.
Bialowas' blunder set up the go-ahead goal, and a crosschecking call against Devin Derkson led to the first of MacIsaac's two power-play goals.
"That made it 4-2 and put us right behind the eight-ball," Sommer said.
Rebels goalie Mike James made another error when he tried to use his skate to intercept a pass and deflected the puck into the net.
