DEMONS WIN ON LATE LAYUP
Mark Haden's driving layup with nine seconds remaining gave Christiansburg a 52-51 victory over Carroll County on Friday night in the New River District opener for both boys' basketball teams.The Blue Demons (5-7, 1-0) rallied from a 48-39 deficit after three quarters to win.
Mike Smith scored 18 points to lead Christiansburg, and Haden finished with 14.
Joey Marshall had 14 for the Cavaliers (7-5, 0-1). \

FOREST - Lanny Duncan tossed in 14 points and Brian Jennings added 12 in leading the Cavaliers (6-5) to the Seminole District victory over the Golden Eagles (5-5).
Eric Flood had 14 points for Staunton River. \
Liberty 41

BEDFORD - Liberty missed 20 free throws but managed a Seminole District victory over the ball-stalling, zone-packing Generals.
The Minutemen (4-7, 4-7) took a three-point halftime lead and made it hold up against William Campbell (1-10, 1-10), which began to spread the court and run the clock in the second quarter.
Liberty made just 10 of 30 free throws but was helped by the Generals' 2-for-14 performance at the free-throw line.
Scott Martin led Liberty with 14 points.
Phillip Loveless paced William Campbell with 15 points. \
Pulaski County 73

DUBLIN - Guard Chris Burns scored 25 points and grabbed eight rebounds as the Cougars rolled the Hilltoppers in a non-district game.
Pulaski County (4-6), playing only its second home game of the season, trailed 36-34 at halftime. The second half was a different story as the Cougars pressured the Hilltoppers into numerous turnovers that resulted in easy baskets.
Chris Foster contributed 18 points for Pulaski County.
James Jones led Glass (5-7) with 12 points. \

INDEPENDENCE - Grayson County hit 10 of its first 14 shots and buried the Green Wave early in a Mountain Empire District game.
The Blue Devils (7-3, 5-2) took a 25-11 lead after the first quarter and blew open the game with a 28-12 run in the third quarter.
Wilbert Campbell sparked Grayson County with 17 points, eight assists and four steals. Bonner Satterwhite added 16 points.
No player scored more than eight points for Narrows (4-4, 4-4). \

PEARISBURG - In a Mountain Empire District game, the Rockets hit 12 of 16 free throws in the final quarter to pull away from the Spartans for their first win of the season.
The score was 34-34 entering the fourth quarter, but Bland (1-7, 1-7) outscored Giles 25-13 in the last quarter.
Brad Harden led Bland with 19 points, including seven in the fourth quarter. Toby Dotson added 17 points.
Rusty Stafford scored a game-high 20 for the Spartans (1-7, 1-7), and Brett Rampey finished with 14. \
Galax 62

GALAX - The Maroon Tide put the clamps on Shawnees scoring ace Kenny Dow in the third quarter to seize control of a Mountain Empire District game.
Dow, who finished with 28 points, had only six in the decisive third quarter when Galax (5-2, 5-4) implemented a box-and-one defense and outscored the Shawnees 16-6 in the period.
Galax got 23 points from Jeff Spells and 18 from Jason Ross. \

Auburn 73
AUBURN - The third quarter proved to be the difference as the Buffaloes overcame a 40-39 halftime deficit to beat the Eagles and stay one game behind Fort Chiswell in the Mountain Empire District.
Fred Via had 16 of his game-high 25 points in the third quarter as Floyd outscored Auburn 24-11. Travis Crawford had 17 points for the Buffaloes (9-1, 7-1).
Brian Sale had 19 points to pace four players in double figures for Auburn (5-5, 4-4). \
Gateway Christian 65
Granite Christian 52
BLACKSBURG - Senior guard Tim Henderson poured in 24 points to lead the Crusaders to an Old Dominion Association of Christian Schools victory over Granite Christian of Max Meadows.
Kevin Lucas and Matt Linkous also scored in double figures for Gateway Christian (8-4).
Jason Edmond has 25 for the Warriors (4-2). \

Pulaski County 45
E. C. Glass 35 The Cougars shut down the Hilltoppers (4-6) in the fourth quarter to win a non-district game.
Carrie McConnell scored 16 points, Cindy Martin 14 and Terri Garland 11 for Pulaski (10-2), which outscored the Hilltoppers 13-5 in the final quarter.
