NEW RIVER PEOPLE

ROBERT L. TURNER III, son of Robert and Denise Turner of Radford, was made an Eagle Scout at a recent ceremony and presentation during a special court of honor of Troop 703. The troup is chartered by the Radford branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Turner's Eagle project involved the cleaning and organization of the Radford Museum during August 1991. A graduate of Radford High School, he is a student at Brigham Young University.

\ DANNY and KIM SLEMP, dairy farmers from Sugar Grove, were runners-up in the 1991 Outstanding Young Dairymen competition in Louisville, Ky. The competition was held during the 23rd annual meeting of Dairymen Inc., a regional milk and dairy products marketing cooperative owned by member farmers.

The Slemps, who represented the cooperative's Southeast Division, milk 114 cows on their 300-acre farm near Pilot Mountain. This year, the Slemps will represent the cooperative and the dairy industry at the National Institute on Cooperative Education.

\ Z.L. FENG of Radford recently won the David Soloway Memorial Award and $200 at the Allied Artists of America 78th Annual National Exhibition held at the National Arts Club in New York. Feng also won a $250 third prize for his portrait "Morning Toilet" at the American Artists Professional League 63rd Grand National Exhibition in New York City. And Feng's "Morning Glories" portrait won Best in Show and $500 and "The Highlander" won the Award of Excellence and $250 at Community Artists '91 exhibit in Bristol.

\ MEI SHU of Radford won the Award of Excellence and $250 at Community Artists '91 exhibit in Bristol for her watercolor "Waterside Bridge."

The Center for Gender Studies at Radford University appointed four New River Valley residents to its community advisory board. They are: CAROLE PRATT, a Pulaski County dentist; JAMES C. TURK, chief judge for the U.S. District Court of Western Virginia; SUSAN VENGRIN LOCKWOOD, vice president for marketing at Radford Community Hospital; and NANCY MOREHOUSE, a Blacksburg physician.

Several New River Community College nursing graduates have received notification from the state licensing board that they have passed the state board exams and are now licensed practical nurses. They are: from Draper, MURIEL M. CREGGER; from Dublin, BRENDA W. BRATTON, DONNA MOORE and ELMA TALLANT; from Hiwassee, HATTIE HAULSEE; from Max Meadows, JOYCE A. MARTIN; from Pulaski, DEBORAH GORE and LOUISE STOOTS; from Radford, SHIRLEY V. PERRY; and from Wytheville, KIMBERLY H. HAGEE and JENNIFER KELLAM.

\ DOROTHY M. ROGERS retired from Litton Poly-Scientific in December after 13 years of service. Her career with the company began in 1978. She worked as a production operator for four years before becoming an electronic assembler until her retirement.

VFW Post 776 in Radford recently named LARRY SAUNDERS Fireman of the Year, DETECTIVE R.T. JONES was named Policeman of the Year and STEPHEN SHAFFER received the Paramedic of the Year Award.

\ LARRY LINKOUS, a Blacksburg businessman and auctioneer, was recently elected vice president of the Virginia Auctioneers Association. Linkous also sits on the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors.

\ RUBY D. EARLY retired from Litton Poly-Scientific in December after 12 years of service. She joined the company in 1979 as a production operator. A lifelong New River Valley resident, Early also served as a deburrer and senior deburrer.
